Preface

This page is a transcription and translation of those portions of A. G. Nathorst's "Bemerkungen über Herrn v. Ettingshausens Aufsats "Zur Tertiärflora" Japans", published as Bihang Till. K. Svenska Vet.-Akad. Handlingar 9(18), pertaining to the family Malvaceae sensu APG, which consist of a few paragraphs on page 10. The same material, a partial leaf from Mogi in Japan, is also covered by the author's "Contributions à la flore fossile du Japon".

Tilia sp.

(Platanus sp. ETTINGSHAUSEN l.c.)

Translation

Tilia sp.

(Platanus sp. ETTINGSHAUSEN l.c[1].)

How Herr von ETTINGSHAUSEN, who is so experienced with fossil leaves, could assign this leaf to Platanus, is completely incomprehensible to me. This leaf is asymetrically four-nerved, and has on one side of the midrib one, on the other two main nerves. The identification as Platanus is therefore not possible. A truncate base as in the present leaf is also so frequent in Tilia, that one must be surprised how Herr von ETTINGHAUSEN can present that as evidence against identification as Tilia.

HEER wrote "… probably Tilia, for which the unequal number of primary nerves on the two sides speaks".
